(AGI) Rome - Lazio beat Fiorentina 1-0 in Rome with a goal by Klose in the 36th minute of the first half. Both teams missed several players, due to injuries (Brocchi and Amauri ) or bans (Dias, Matuzalem, Gamberini, Olivera, Cassani), and the first half was far from exciting, as Nastasic's tackle on Klose inside Fiorentina's penalty area in the 17th (not punished by referee Brighi) was the only episode worth mentioning apart from the German striker's goal (his 13th goal of the season).
Lazio reject Reja resignation ROME — Lazio coach Edy Reja has had his resignation rejected by the struggling club on Wednesday, ahead of their Europa League second round second leg clash with Atletico Madrid. Reja and the team have come in for heavy criticism following Sunday's 5-1 defeat at Palermo, their sixth in 11 matches since the turn of the year. But following press speculation, Lazio confirmed they had rejected Reja's resignation. "At 2pm Edy Reja offered his resignation but the club rejected it so nothing has changed," said Lazio press officer Stefano di Martino. "On the team's return to Rome everyone will make their evaluation." It's not the first time this season Reja had resigned but been convinced to stay on having taken similar action at the beginning of the season. Reja left with the team on Wednesday from Rome's Fiumicino airport to head to Spain where Lazio are looking to turn around a 3-1 first leg deficit. "That's enough, leave me alone," said Reja when questioned by journalists at the airport. Later at the pre-match press conference in Madrid he gave contradictory suggestions as to what his future holds. "There was a difference of opinion, you all know my future," said Reja, suggesting he would leave, before changing tack. "I'm thinking about tomorrow's game, we'll try to honour the commitment and play well. "Then we will talk." Lazio pulled off a stunning second-half comeback against lowly Cesena in Serie A, recovering from two goals down to win 3-2 despite playing for nearly an hour with 10 men on Thursday. Adrian Mutu gave Cesena the lead then debutant Vincenzo Iaquinta fired home a spot kick following an incident which also saw Lazio defender Abdoulay Konko sent off. However, Lazio surged back in the second half with three goals in 10 minutes, from Hernanes, Senad Lulic and Libor Kozak. Lazio moves provisionally into third place, ahead of Udinese which faces second-placed AC Milan on Saturday. Cesena remains second from bottom, four points off safety. Meanwhile, Siena beat Napoli 2-1 in the first leg of the Italian Cup semifinals. The second leg will be played on March 21.

'Bring on the big guns' says Lazio's Sculli

After reaching the UEFA Europa League round of 32 thanks to a 2-0 defeat of Group D winners Sporting Clube de Portugal and a favour from elimimnated FC Zürich in the other match, S.S. Lazio goalscorer Giuseppe Sculli told UEFA.com that the Swiss side's first goal against FC Vaslui was "a real boost" for his side. Along with Sporting defender Tiago Ilori, the midfielder is now looking forward to Friday's draw in the hope that his side will be pitted against one of the Manchester clubs, saying: "Bring them on."

    Giuseppe Sculli, Lazio forward
It's very strange to play in a game like that as we had to win and hope that Zürich also played a good game but that's exactly how it went and now we are very happy with qualification.

I heard some noise from the stands and I immediately asked what happened to the people on our bench and they confirmed that Zürich had scored. It was a great boost for us on the pitch; we told ourselves that if we managed to earn three points we could really qualify.

I think I scored a good goal. It was not easy because their goalkeeper was rushing out and I didn't have much time. Fortunately I managed to control the ball well and place my shot. In the draw there will be teams like Manchester City and Manchester United: bring them on. I would love to play a game like that.

    Albano Bizzarri, Lazio goalkeeper
It was a strange game because we did not know which way the other game was going to go. Fortunately Vaslui lost and we are through; we are very happy and I think it was deserved over the six games. I made a couple of good saves, especially the second [from a free-kick by Valeri Bozhinov] but what really counts is the victory and the performance of the team. As regards myself I'm happy because I had just returned from an injury and I had not trained much ahead of this game.

Fortunately I was very comfortable on the pitch anyway. Now there will be big teams in the draw, teams who are used to playing in the UEFA Champions League and Lazio have not played in games like those for a few years now. So it will be great for us and for the fans.

    Tiago Ilori, Sporting defender
We were already first in the group but we still wanted to win this game. We were motivated against a great team in a great stadium but we just didn't win. We are proud to have finished first, we reached our main objective quite early on, but coming into this game we wanted to win it and maybe it could have gone a bit better.

I'm not sure it had anything to do with motivation, it was just one of those games in which I don't really understand how they scored. In my opinion it was offside, but anyway we didn't do enough to win the game. I'd love to play against United. Even just being there to watch the game against them would be very exciting.

Serie A: (11th day) Lazio Roma 1-0 Parma

Lazio edges Parma to go 1st!!!

Substitute Giuseppe Sculli scored the only goal of the game six minutes from time to hand the Romans all three points.

The result has lifted Lazio level on 21 points with new leaders Udinese, who won 2-1 against Siena to climb above in active Juventus.

Parma were unlucky not to go in front before the break with Jonathan Biabiany's header finding the woodwork after Lazio's Senad Lulic had earlier been denied by the crossbar.

The Romans went into the game on the back of a midweek 1-0 triumph over FC Zurich - their first win in Group D in the Europa League.

A minute's silence was observed prior to the start in memory of the six people killed in Liguria due to flash floods this weekend.

Sebastian Giovinco had the first sight of goal for the visitors after 11 minutes but blasted his 15-yard strike just wide.

Shortly after, Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti kept out Graziano Pelle's bullet strike from outside the area.

Lazio had a great chance to go in front in the 19th minute. Djibril Cisse got his head behind Hernanes' cross from the left and his effort went over the crossbar.

The hosts continued to push for the opener and were almost rewarded.

Lulic's header from Abdoulay Konko's cross struck the crossbar with Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante already beaten.

Lazio nearly fell behind just before half-time, when Biabiany headed a corner against the post for Parma.

Lazio controlled possession after the re-start and almost broke the deadlock in the 69th minute.

Miroslav Klose nodded Hernanes' cross towards the far post and his effort was saved by Mirante.

On the hour mark, Cristian Zaccardo got past his marker but struck wide from a good position.

Lazio finally broke through in the 84th minute following a fantastic run by Klose.

Substitute Libor Kozak got a touch on Klose's perfect cross and his effort rebounded off the crossbar. Sculli then tapped the rebound into the back of the net.

Bologna 0 - 2 Lazio - Lazio beat Bologna to go second

Lazio clinched their third straight victory in Serie A and climbed into second place by beating Bologna 2-0.

A first-half own goal by Bologna striker Robert Acquafresca put the visitors on their way before Lazio's Senad Lulic doubled his team's advantage early in the second half.

Bologna, with just one victory so far, could not find a way past Lazio goalkeeper Federico Marchetti and slipped to their fifth defeat of the campaign.

The result lifted Edy Reja's men to just one point behind league leaders Udinese after seven games.

Lazio went into the encounter at the Renato Dall' Ara stadium looking to replicate the form that saw them beat Roma 2-1 in last weekend's Eternal City derby.

Lazio struggled to put a good move together in the opening 20 minutes and were fortunate to go in front midway through the first half as Hernanes' powerful free-kick was deflected into his own net by Acquafresca.

Acquafresca almost equalised a minute later but his right-footed strike from the edge of the area was kept out by Marchetti.

The home side continued to push forward and was nearly rewarded in the 35th minute.

With Marchetti out of position, Acquafresca struck a goalbound shot from 15 yards but Lulic made a vital clearance to deny Bologna's equaliser.

On the stroke of half-time, Gaston Ramirez's stinging drive from 30 yards was kept out by Marchetti.

Lazio extended their advantage three minutes after the restart.

Djibril Cisse fed Lulic inside the area and his powerful central shot beat Bologna goalkeeper Federico Agliardi.

Bologna surged forward more aggressively but could not find a way past Lazio's well-placed defence.

With 15 minutes remaining, Archimede Morleo's curled free-kick forced Marchetti to dive to his right to keep the ball out.

At the other end, Lulic found Cisse inside the area and the Frenchman's eight-yard effort went just wide of the far post.

Lazio held on for their third win on the road this season.
